How Much Should I Pay For Wedding Photography?
Updated: Jul 28
It looks like someone popped the question, and someone said yes!
Congratulations on your engagement!!!
An engagement is an exciting whirlwind of a buzzing phone with well wishes and even more exciting, making your dream wedding a reality! I don't think it is with too much bias that we say photography is one of the first things our brides-to-be consider and look forward to when they envision the engagement photos. They will be taking to make their big announcement and the wedding photography that will document their special day!
A lot of newly engaged couples wonder:
"How much does wedding photography cost?"
And I am here to answer the question!
Let me preface this by saying that this is a very subjective question and is up to a lot of interpretation. While that may sound daunting, this is actually a good thing because it means that there are options for you.
So, I am going to let you in on a little well-known secret from the photography community. You can find someone to do your wedding photography at literally any price range. You read that right!
From a friend or relative with an I-phone or a DSLR to a $10,000+ wedding photographer, you certainly have your pick when it comes to pricing.
With that being said, the most important question you and your fiance should consider is, "Why do we want a wedding photographer?"
I promise you that there is no such thing as a couple who wants wedding photography that just wants someone to show up and "take pictures." I know my couples put a lot of time, thought, and heart into their wedding day.
I know this because I see the way your eyes light up when you tell me about the perfect wedding dress that will steal his breath away. How the details you chose best paints your love story. How excited you both are about have the loved ones that surround you in celebration. Of course, my personal favorite, whether or not you think there will be tears waiting for you at the altar.
So believe me when I tell you from the bottom of my heart that you deserve more than someone who will "just show up and take your pictures" because you want memories that you will fall in love with every time you see them.
For you to have an idea where to place your budget, you need to ask your instead of "How much should I pay for a wedding photographer" to "What do we want to get from our wedding photography?"
Knowing where you want the final place for your favorite photos may be quite beneficial to determine where you should start your budget.
For example, A wedding album is a usually expensive (and worthwhile) investment you can designate a portion of your money to. This article isn't about justifying what goes into an album, but you can expect your wedding prices to start at $2,000 and up.
This may be news to you, or maybe not. But either way, one mistake I want you to avoid at all costs is to try to find the most inexpensive wedding photographer that would provide your needs.
This is so important, I am going to say it once again because if there is one takeaway from this article, it is this statement. I want you to avoid at all costs is trying to find the most inexpensive wedding photographer that would provide your needs.
I don't mean to stay away from affordable wedding photographers at all! And I really want you to go with a wedding photographer that is going to offer you the most value. What I do mean is if you want an album, then don't choose someone because they are offering the lowest price because this can turn dream wedding into a nightmare of regret. Remember, you only have a wedding once in a lifetime, which means you are entrusting someone only once chance to capture your dream wedding.
Instead, pick someone who understands and helps you uncover what you truly want. In fact, some of our clients mistake an album for a picture book, and have no idea how powerful reliving their wedding in an album truly is!
I hope you have a better idea of how to figure out the cost of hiring a professional photographer to document your marriage. Here are some horror stories of brides read by soon-to-be-brides read at a bridal show. This video was created by our friends Professional Photographers of America.
In conclusion, instead of asking "how much should I pay for a wedding photographer," it may be in your best interest to consider the question, "what do I want for your wedding photography? After all, when the cake is gone, the photographs are going to be all that you have left.
