How to look your BEST for your Engagement Session

*Fun Tip: Did you know that red will beautifully make you pop from a green background!?

Congratulations on your engagement!

As a wedding photographer, one of my favorite modern wedding traditions for couples is the engagement session. This is because we firmly believe that couples deserve to have professional photos besides just on their wedding day. Just like your relationship and love story exists before and beyond your wedding, so too should you have photographs to document that!

You are probably wondering what to wear for your engagement pictures. These may possibly be the first professional photos you will take together as a couple! So, how should you dress to celebrate and share the good news!

Engagement photography is a fantastic way to have stunning, professional photos of you as a couple without having to be in your wedding attire but without the dress or the tux, what do you wear?

Here are five tips/guidelines to help you plan on what to wear to your engagement session!

Complimentary Fashion Over Matching Outfits

There is a reason couples fashion is a trend and it is because color schemes and complimentary fashion offers a non-verbal way to express your connection! That is what photographs are right? A way to show rather than tell?

Through the lens of a photographer, it is better for couples to be wearing complementary fashion over matching exactly. For example, if one partner is wearing a patterned shirt, the other should pick a solid color from that pattern to compliment them. This is because, if both were to wear the same thing, they run the risk of the focus being on the pattern rather than the couple. This goes the same with botIn your photographs you’ll want to wear your clothes, not have your clothes wear you!

Timeless or Trends?

Your engagement photos are a prototype for your wedding. You want to have photos that will be relevant whether you are looking at them five, fifteen, or thirty years from now. This is why I as a photographer tell couples to err on the side of timeless over trendy. If I could only tell my clients one sentence of advice on how to dress for their engagement photos I would tell them to dress up a little more than they would for a nice date night. This will give your photos a truly beautiful and timeless feel regardless of your location!

However, I’m going to say something a little controversial here. I love creativity. I love when my couples come to me and say, ‘I know this is a little unconventional but we have this idea…”

If there is a trend that you both absolutely love, I am all for finding a way to creatively capture that on camera. Do you want to be in a suit or a flowing evening gown at the top of a mountain? Maybe add a throne or two? Let’s make it happen. Costume changes or bringing an extra outfit or two is a great way to get the best of both worlds!

Maybe you both are diehard cinephiles, or bookworms and want to incorporate themes from your favorite shared movies or books? Let’s figure out a way to make that happen! Your engagement session should be fun and the photos you get should be wonderful memories, timeless, and most importantly, an authentic reflection of you!

Wear Fitting or Tailored Clothes

You know the person who told you that the camera adds ten pounds? Well, they weren't a professional photographer. The lens we choose, the posing we incorporate, and the angles we shoot at are all tailored for you and your body in mind!

Fashion goes a long way in helping! Why do you think wedding dresses and tuxes are tailored for you specifically? As I said earlier, it adheres to the concept that you should wear the clothes, not the other way around. Avoid bulky clothes and designs. Instead, opt for clothes that fit and follow your natural shape. If you follow this guideline, I guarantee that you will look your best!

Don’t forget the Shoes!

Don’t let your shoes hold you back!

Ladies, bring the heels and a comfortable pair of sneakers or flats! I love flats as much as the next person, but heels can do amazing work with your standing portraits! They can realign your posture in flattering ways and make the best portraits, and the best part? You don’t have to commit to them the whole time!

Gentlemen, making sure your shoes match the occasion and your outfits will help make sure your photos are timeless and that your shoes do not distract from the moment.

Backgrounds, Backdrops, and Memories

I love capturing epic backgrounds and backdrop details, however, keep in mind that your engagement photos are about you and your connection. Meaning, you don’t need to worry about looking overdressed in front of those rustic barn doors you fell in love with or a stroll in the desert. You don’t have to dress for your background, believe me, we’ll make it work!

On the Subject of Ring Close Ups

We often advise our brides to get a manicure before their engagement session for optimum appeal for those beautiful, close-up ring shots! Manicures, whether french, clear coat, or something bolder add a certain amount of charm when getting those close ups of your ring! They liked it so they put a ring on it, right? You wouldn’t want to let that sparkle and shine go to waste!
